The Park of the Appian Way isone of the biggest archaeological areas of Europe embracing 4580 hectares. The Park is crossed by the Appian Way, surrounded by several macroareas, such as the Caffarella Valley, the Aqueducts areas and other areas. Download the map of the Park of the Appian Way

If you want to visit the archaeological and historical route of the via Appia with the origianl cobblestone sof 312 BC, get off at 60, Via Appia Antica at the bus stop called “Appia Antica Domine Quo Vadis”) to get many services: bike rental, guideds tours (ebike, walink or golf cart), information, maps and free wi-fi .

BIKE RENTAL: open every day from 9.30 am to 5-7 pm according to season pm (lunch break 1.2). Show up or book in advance, get our maps and tips and venture in the park.

If you want to start your trip from the beginning, passing by our office, keep walking on the Appian Way through the private road of the catacombs of S. Callisto to avoid the first 1,5 km with cars to easily reach the restricted traffic zone (after S. Sebastian catacombs, once passed the Villa and Circus of Emperor Maxentius). Please notice:

• the private road of the catacombs is open to the public according to their opening/closing time: every day from 9 am to 6 pm (day off: Wednesdays). If you want to reach directly the car free area, get off at the bus stop “Basilica di San Sebastiano” with the 118 bus (do you need bus timetable? Download Moovit on your mobile phone).
• Mondays: day off of the sites on the Appian Way (excluded the catacombs, open). You can enjoy the Park passing by.

A green area tailor-made for families, with no cars at all. You can ride or walk the Caffarella (200 hectares). Entrance: from the city centre take the 118 bus and get off at the bus stop called “Appia Antica /Domine Quo Vadis”.  Keep walking on the same side of the road, after the Domine Quo Vadis church turn left and take “Via della Caffarella”. The road will turn into a dirt path leading to a valley surrounded by rural villas (such as Casale della Vaccareccia where you can buy home made cheese) and animals (goats, sheeps, horses). There are no restaurants here, just water fountains. Download the map of the Caffarella Valley.

If you want to pass through the arches build by romans, you’re on the place. One of the main entrances of the Park of the Aqueducts (north side of the Park of the Appian Way) is 221, via Lemonia. You can take the A line of the subway and get off at Giulio Agricola, then walk up to the entrance. Find out the best route with the App Moovit. There are a few restaurants and water fountains. The Park is always open and free. If you want to to discover the Appian way crossing all the Park from the beginning, please note that in order to avoid the the first 1,5 km and reach the restricted traffic zone you can pass through the private road of the catacombs of S. Callisto following the opening /closing time of the site: all day 9 am / 5 pm (except Wednesdays, being the day off).
There’s no need to show the Green Pass to walk or ride the Appian Way. You need it just for visiting/entering the sites/cafés along the way.

We strongly suggest to visit the Park by day, before sunset, since there aren’t enough street lights on the way.

Most of the sites don’t need to be reserved. Monday is the day off off the sites on the Appian Way, during that day you can admire them from the outside. Find below a short list of sites, we do suggest to check out their opening/closing times:

ON THE APPIAN WAY:

• Domine Quo Vadis Church – free
• Catacombs of S. Callisto – € 10 (adults). Ticket includes guided tour (30 min). Day off: Wednesday
• Catacombs of S. Sebastiano – € 10 (adults). Ticket includes guided tour (30 min). 
• Complex of Massenzio Emperor – free. Day off: Monday
• Metella’s Tomb  Day off: Monday
• Capo di Bove  Day off: Monday .(Just the outside is free) ⟩ all the three sites need La Mia Appia Card (€ 0 under 18 y.o; € 8 for one single entrance for the 3 sites and € 15 for one year entrance).
• Quintili’s Villa  Day off: Monday

THE CAFFARELLA VALLEY AND THE PARK OF THE AQUEDUCTS: there are no entrances, rural villas together with the historical heritage can be seen externally.
