Human presence
There is no doubt that the expansion of human settlements in republican times and the urbanization of the imperial period considerably changed the shape of the land in this part of the Ager Romanus.
Human presence with an economy based on agriculture meant that houses, suburban villas and rustic villages spread out over the land; this created a varied landscape with large cultivated areas mixed with "natural" looking pasture, dotted with various dwellings perfectly set into their context.
The building of the great road created new scenic elements: firstly the tombs, the temples and the funeral infrastructures, then the inns and hostelries offering refreshment, the post and exchange houses and other services useful to travellers on the Regina Viarum.
